Artifact Armory

The Workshop

Born from Sawdust
& Spell Counters.

Artifact Armory started at a kitchen table where two hobbies collided: woodworking and Magic: The Gathering. Shane had been working with wood for years, always building something, and collecting Commander decks for just as long. The question was inevitable: why doesn't my deck have a home that matches how much I care about it?

What started as one custom deck box became a waitlist. That waitlist became a business. Today, every custom MTG deck box that leaves this shop is still cut, finished, and inspected by hand.

How It Started

From Frustration to Craft

Every Commander player knows the feeling: you've spent months perfecting a deck, tracking down that one foil, agonizing over every slot. Then you store it in a flimsy plastic box that cracks, warps, and does nothing to honor the collection inside.

That frustration turned into an obsession. I'd been CNC milling and hand-finishing wooden pieces for years, and building a proper deck box felt like the obvious next project. But “obvious” didn't mean easy. I spent months iterating, tweaking interior tolerances by fractions of a millimeter, testing different leather thicknesses, swapping hardware until the snap had the right weight and click. Every detail had to be perfect. It wasn't a side project anymore. It was the thing I couldn't put down until it was right.

When I finally got there, the result was a walnut deck box that held 100 double-sleeved cards perfectly, latched with a satisfying click, and had a grain pattern unlike anything you'd find in a game store. Friends at the Commander table wanted one. Then their friends did too. Artifact Armory was born not from a business plan, but from a waitlist that wouldn't stop growing.

The Process

CNC Precision. Hand Finish. Every Time.

Every box combines the consistency of CNC milling with the warmth of hand-applied finishing. That's how we deliver custom deck box quality at a price that makes sense.

01

Select

We hand-pick each board from domestic suppliers. Grain pattern, color, and character. No two are alike.

02

Mill

CNC precision cuts every joint to within thousandths of an inch. Tight tolerances mean seamless assembly.

03

Finish

Hand-rubbed Rubio Monocoat natural oil. It deepens the grain and builds a protective barrier that improves with age.

04

Fit

Aged brass hardware is fitted and aligned by hand. Latigo leather strap closure. Final inspection on every single box.

What Makes Us Different

Why Players Choose a Custom MTG Deck Box Over Plastic

One-of-One Grain

Every custom wooden deck box is cut from a unique piece of hardwood. The exact grain pattern, color, and figure of your box will never be replicated. That’s not marketing. That’s how wood works.

Materials That Age Up, Not Out

Walnut darkens. Leather gets supple. Brass develops patina. Everything we use gets better with time. Your plastic Satin Tower can’t say that.

A Guarantee That Means Something

Lifetime craftsmanship warranty. If a joint loosens, the wood cracks, or the snap fails, we fix or replace it. Free. Forever. Try getting that from a factory in Shenzhen.

Quality Control

Meet Our QC Inspector

Every Artifact Armory deck box passes final inspection by Arthas, our miniature dachshund and Head of Quality Control. He supervises every stage of the build process with an intensity usually reserved for squirrels.

His qualifications include: zero tolerance for loose hardware, an uncanny ability to detect sawdust on any surface, and a persistent belief that leather straps are chew toys (they aren't, Arthas).

“If it's good enough for Arthas, it's good enough for your Commander deck.”

What We Stand For

Our Commitments

Handcrafted

Every box is made one at a time. No assembly lines. No shortcuts. Each one gets the same attention whether it’s our first or our thousandth. That’s what makes every custom deck box MTG players receive from us one of a kind.

Sustainable

Responsibly harvested domestic hardwoods. We minimize waste in every cut and repurpose offcuts into smaller shop projects. No MDF. No plywood. No veneers.

Guaranteed

Built to last a lifetime. If the hardware loosens, the wood cracks, or anything fails under normal use, we’ll make it right. No questions. That’s our lifetime craftsmanship warranty.

Made Here

Every custom deck box for MTG is built by a real deck box maker in Southeast Iowa. Not imported, not dropshipped, not assembled from a kit. Built from a raw plank of hardwood to a finished product in the same shop.
